We've had many requests for updated information on Mom, so we are
writing. Unfortunately, Mom's condition has made tiny steps forward
& possible large steps backward. Her white blood cell count
has been slowly increasing, indicative of an
infection, but the Doctors are unable to pinpoint where it might be.
They have done a culture on her mouth, and on the IV that they
replaced. Still no answer. At this time we await the results of a
CAT Scan, that will check several things (neurological for any possible damage,
vertebra in her neck to see if the crack is healing, & chest, abdomen & pelvis for infection.
She is on kidney dialysis Monday Wednesday
& Friday this week. Her kidneys are operating at a very low
level. Her breathing had improved over
the weekend, and they were able to turn down her oxygen levels. Before
taking her downstairs for the CAT Scan, they would have had to put her on the
standard ventilator, which they will switch back after she returns to her
room.
They have stopped her sedative medication, in
an attempt to observe her response level, but as yet, she has not responded as
they wanted. At one point this morning, she did open her eyes to the sound
of her name, but only after repeated urgings & raised voice from the
nurse.
While we realize many may wish to learn more
about Mom's condition directly from the nurses, we feel that we have done the
right thing by sending you this information ourselves. It is not our
intent to offend anyone. Most nurses on Mom's floor are responsible
for two patients. Mom's nurses spend their entire shift taking care of Mom
& only Mom. You can see that it is important they be free to care for
her. We are not medically educated, but we are working on correcting
that. Please trust us on this. Should you have any
questions, please, email us rather than call the hospital (it's
the easiest way for us to handle all questions & concerns).
For those of you that may wish to visit, Dad's
cousin left a Visitor's Journal, where Mom's visitors my write, or read what has
been left before them, as well as a book of poems. Mom's nurses read to
her as well, and in so doing, they are learning a little bit more of the woman
they are giving such exceptional care to.
We are taking advantage of our resources (i.e.
the many people who care about our parents & have been able to help us with
details or tasks beyond our abilities). We have been very impressed with
all of the staff at St. Francis, & are grateful for their efforts. We
appreciate your care & concern, & hope to have your continued prayers
& support.
