Subject: 1/5/07 update from Tom
Tom claims he can look up parts & play solitaire on a
computer! He is online & we can communicate, but it's easiest if I
still send the emails!
Tom reports that Mom looks good, sounds good, & is peeling
in huge chunks. Unfortunately, she fell asleep while talking to him,
shortly after her dialysis was complete. That's pretty common, they tell
us, for dialysis patients to be so tired. We hold out high hopes that she
will not be on dialysis all of her life.
Tom was able to be there while Mom went through her latest
swallow test. She passed the ice cream test, but not the grape
juice. Tom really felt that Mom would have much preferred ice tea to grape
juice -- or just about anything else over grape juice! He also had the
opportunity to meet with one of the paramedics that brought Mom up from Savanna,
Oklahoma in the Trauma Truck. She told him they've been taking turns
coming up to visit Mom, and think of Mom as a miracle. The reason I
mentioned the paramedic here is that it turns out she is also from Texas &
she agreed with Tom on the whole iced tea idea. She also told Tom about
the company she works for ... she showed him the ambulance in the background of
the picture of Mom, Dad & TJ at the 2004 Texas HOG Rally. It's a small
world.
Tom & Rebecca decided to hold off on telling Mom she is
moving from ICU. We worry about Mom's perception of time. Since Mom
can't move until a bed becomes available, & it may be a few days before she
gets to move, we didn't want to get her hopes up only to have them fall over
time. Tom says there's no room in the inn yet.
Tom has been in touch with Sister Catherine, who checked to
make sure he has been eating, asked about the kids, and said she was
happy with Mom's progress.

told me what all he wanted to say, it only took a couple of lines! But ...
