Subject: 3/16/07 Looking
Good!
What I feared would be a terribly difficult day
for Mom turned out to be an enjoyable family trip. Tom, Deb & I
arrived at Mountain Towers shortly after 7:30 (Mom had called to wake us up
shortly after 6 ... we were late!) She did remarkable in the car,
getting herself in and out of the car almost entirely by herself. She even
ordered a breakfast burrito from McDonald's and ate 3 full bites without any ill
effects, before turning it over to Tom for consumption. She was
full.
While on the x-ray
table, pictures were taken of just about all the broken bones in the lower
extremities (her right foot being the exception). Her right tibia/fibula
is the only one that requires a bone graft.
Her free flap looks
excellent, according to Dr Ozer. Mom thinks its nasty-looking. All
stitches & staples were removed (must've been two dozen stitches & 50
staples ... but it went quick & Mom was a trooper.) She is scheduled
to have her next surgery on April 19th.
The doctors have said
Mom can begin bearing weight on her left leg. Her right leg is not ready
yet. Her feet are still a mess and will be dealt with much
later.
We were excited to be out with Mom. We
decided on Olive Garden in Ft Collins for lunch. (Lindsay, you know I was
thinking of you!) But as we parked, it was as though Mom ran into
the proverbial brick wall. She was out of energy & ready for
bed. She'd been at it since 6 & it was then 3. We never got out
of the car. She felt she should go in because we weren't going to get to
eat, but we assured her we wouldn't starve ourselves on her account!
She did agree to
Pineapple Sherbet from Safeway before returning to her room. By 4:30, we
had left her tucked in for the night with her bowl of sherbet by the
bed. While pregnant, Mom always craved Pineapple Sherbet in the middle of
the night. Dad made many a midnight run to the icehouse in Texas for
a pint, and he always went on his Harley.
We figure she'll need a
couple days rest to recuperate from this busy day, but we hope to begin taking
her to Mass on Sunday. We believe that getting out of the 'hospital' has
given her a fresh outlook on the future. We hope she'll continue to make
such big steps
It's turned out to be a long day for us as
well, & tomorrow morning I have to be at the school at 6:30, to catch
my ride to Morgan's first track meet, in Glenrock. I know there will
Harleys rumbling past Mountain Towers & my house on a poker run, & there
will be more along the road to the track meet. It is encouragement for Mom
& I to both get back on two legs & two wheels! Enjoy the weather
friends ~ Val & Tom
