While the events of these past months have been tragically sad
and hard for us, we have learned that we must carry on. And the act of carrying
on can be made so much easier if we can see more than tragedy in our
vision. Despite our pain, physical and emotional, a healthy sense of humor
is a powerful form of healing.
I would never make light of the pain
we have suffered. But irony seems to stay at our shoulders, with each step
we take.
Last week I visited Dr Basta's
office for the last time, unless I choose to have the hardware removed from
my leg. She has completely released me.
Tonight, Tom is visiting the emergency
room. Stepping out of his 5th wheel, he came down wrong on his foot &
rolled his ankle. Since he has a nasty sprain on his left ankle,
all thoughts that perhaps now he will see about getting his broken bone in
his right foot repaired are dashed. He broke it nearly two
decades ago, & it has caused him discomfort and pain in the ensuing
years. But he has rejected all suggestions that he get it fixed, as he
leads a very mobile life & crutches do not fit his needs. For at least
the next three days, he is confined to crutches anyway.
Such setbacks are best viewed as
challenges to be overcome. ... As long as we can space them out so that
somebody remains healthy, we'll be able to manage. I can speak from
experience to say that the minor challenges encountered with a broken leg have
given me but a small true view of the challenges Mom faces each day. ~
